Hi there! Welcome to our website. Thanks for visiting and have a great day.
What are your thoughts about Christmas? Do you look forward to it and relish the opportunity to spend more time with your family and get a few days away from work?
Or are you one of those people who can’t stand being with your family and dread the thought of spending a whole day pretending to be Happy Families?
My friend rang me this morning and started to moan about going Christmas shopping with her husband. It’s their “last chance” before the kids break up from school and my friend told her husband to be ready by 9.00am. The whole day seems such a chore for her, but she was adamant that her husband had to be with her and chose the family gifts. It seems a nice idea but as I put the phone down I wondered why go through all this “fuss” just for one day.
What is so important about Christmas Day that triggers something inside of you to do things with your family which, who you generally go to great lengths to avoid? My friend nevers go shopping with her husband, so why choose, today, one of busiest periods of the year to battle through crowds and shop for gifts, baffles me.
My Christmas Story
Looking back on my childhood, Christmas was a time of family celebrations and gatherings. Mum would be up all night preparing the turkey and we would wake to the smell of ham (yes, back in the days I ate meat), scrambled eggs, coco, fried tomatoes, plantain and home-made bread. Mum would take out the Special Queen Anne Dining Set, we would have napkins and all sit down and eat breakfast. Usually Dad was out early and mum would be rushing to go to work, so it made the day special to sit down and have breakfast together. I don’t know how mum did it, because my brother and I were up early sneaking downstairs to glimpse our presents..but somehow mum always got there first.
Then there would be church and phone calls from aunts and uncles abroad. The day was full of good cheer and festivities.
Yet I know for many people Christmas is a time of sorrow and pain. A time of reflection and wondering where old friends are. If you are grieving and missing lost ones than Christmas has a hollow ring. It took me a long time to get used to my brother and cousin not being physically present at Christmas, especially as John’s birthday is December 23rd and my cousin passed away on December 16th and buried December 30th. Certain dates stand out in memory and Christmas has a way of reminding us of our past, present and future dreams.
